KCW day 3 (& Project Run and Play sew along) - KCW Tag 3

This week is not only kids clothes week, but also refashion/upcycle week at Project Run and Play. I wanted to also contribute something. I do have some old t-shirts in my recycle bin. However, they are plain and boring and I just use them in combination with fun print. Not exactly what I was wanted for the challenge. However, I had this plain and boring purple hoodie lying around and thought about all those fun dinosaur hoodies that I saw in the internet in the last years. As both my daughter and my husband love dragons, I decided to sew one. The second costume for KCW (here you can find the zebra) and if everything works out it still won' be the last one.

KCW day 1 and 2 - KCW Tag 1 und 2

Also verzeiht bitte die wenig professionellen Bilder...

It's that time again: Kids Clothes Week. For one week moms all around the globe sew clothes for ther kids. I'm in, too. Like last time I'll concentrate on sewing and not so much on blogging an taking pics. So please excuse the far from perfect pics...

Schon ein Jahr alt (20 Dinge über dich) - 1st birthday (20 things about you)

Also: 20 Dinge über unseren kleinen großen 1 Jahr alten J.:

Yesterday was our little man's first birthday. As always at such days, we are stunned how fast time flies by. And that won't change. One day they are little and the next they are telling you how not cool you are :) So, thought about what we want to remember about him also in some years. So, 20 things about our little big 1 year old J:

How to alter any basic bodice pattern to a Dirndl pattern

Was?

Hi everybody and welcome back. I first want to say: Wow! Thanks for all the nice comments to my last post. I'm so glad that you like the Dirndl that I sewed for my daughter for the Roots Sewing Series. What? You don't know what I'm talking about? Then check out my last post (there's also a fun giveaway waiting for you!). Today I want to show you how I altered the bodice pattern piece of the Vroni-Dirndl by Mondbresal to get the kind of Dirndl that I was going for. You don't necessarily have to have the Vroni pattern, but could do this with any basic bodice pattern piece of a dress (e.g. this free one by the cottage mama: party dress). However, you will then also have to change the neckline.

Roots - sewing your heritage (+a giveaway)

I had the unbelievable luck to get asked by Heidi from Elegance and Elephants to participate in her Roots Sewing Series. When I got her email I was pretty much freaking out. Heidi asks me? That's totally crazy ;) However, I decided to accept this chance and challenge and I must say I'm so happy I did. I have never before sewn so many hours just for one single outfit (I didn't take the time, but I think it must have been somewhere between 15 and 20 hours), included so many details, ripped so many seams. But, I have also never before been so proud about an outfit ;) (So please be aware: Picture overload...)

Mara blouse (PR&P sewalong)

This week the new season of Project Run and Play starts. The theme is "Winter Wonderland". I big plans in my head for this and the other weeks. I wanted to really dive into the sealong. However, then came the email from Heidi. You don't know what I'm talking about? Then check out this post. Since then I only sewed the outfit for the roots series. Many, many hours of work - but more about this on Friday. Anyways, I still wanted to take part in PR&P and decided to interpret the theme a little bit more freely. I just left the "land" out. If you have Winter and Wonder what is more like that than christmas? So, I give you Rs christmas dress...

Kinderkleidergrößen in verschiedenen Ländern - Sizes of kids clothes

I'm working both with English and German patterns and I would love it if my post inspired also some english speaking readers to sew their first German pattern. However, besides the language there is something else that you first have to understand: The sizes. There is no 12mt, 2T or 5 to see anywhere.

The very first pattern that I sewed was this blazer by Blank Slate patterns - yes, I know, quite ambitious. I blogged about it here. Besides various difficulties with the sewing itself (due to me being an absolute beginner, not due to issues with the instructions), I also had to realize that our sizes in continental Europe are totally different from those in the US. Some research on the internet quickly helped me to realize that US sizes are essentially the age of the child, but back then I couldn't find what the "T" in for example 3T ment.
In fact, I didn't know it until very recently. I had just accepted it without bothering anymore. Some time ago I gave two digital patterns to Miriam as I had got them a second time via the Sew Fab Bundle. It didn't take long until she asked me: "What does the sizes mean? Especially the T?" Okay, time to ask someone who ought to know: Melly from Melly Sews and Blank Slate Patterns. Melly is super nice and took only some hours to answer my email. And what you guys know became clear to me: T is for Toddler and is important if there are double sizes: Whether to choose 24m or 2T depends on the body of your child - more baby or more toddler like...
So now that this became clear, I wanted to also shortly want to let you english speaking people understand what the sizes in Continental European Children's clothes mean: 74, 92, 104, etc. always are the kid's size in cm. For example 104 (i.e. about 4T) means 104 cm which equals to your kid being approximately 3 feet 5 inches tall.

Dann immer her damit...

I hope this helps. The table sums it all up. I left out the baby sizes. But the principle is the same. European sizes use the height of the child (50, 56, 62, 68, 74 cm). Btw. if you have any other questions regarding sewing of german or other european patterns, just ask...

Weekend sewing #13

This post has been in preparation for quite some time and then I even posted the book review first and totally forgot to mention the new year. Well, I of course want to wish you a really happy new year. Do you have many resolutions? I'm not so much into resolutions, but also do have some goals and ideas for the new year. In February I'll get back to Munich to the university. I'm really looking forward to using my brain, doing experiments, investigating some rocks, visiting conferences, writing papers etc. - well, to being a scientist again ;) I don't know how much time I'll then have left for blogging and sewing, but I definetely won't disappear totally. I have the train rides to write some blog posts and so many fun ideas what I want to do...

Already some time ago the wonderful Miri has given me her new book "Tolle Geschenke selbst genäht"  (about sewing presents) to sew something out of it and to do a blog post about my experience. Even though she gave me the book, all the opinions in this post are truely my own! Before I say something about her new book, I want to shortly take the time to tell you how I got to know Miri. In December 2012 I took the book "Noch mehr tolle Taschen selbst genäht" (about sewing bags) out of my bookshelf to check whether there is a pattern that I could use for a notebook case for my mother in law. I stumbled across the author's pic and thought: "That's the mother of J., who is in the same kindergarden as R." I did some blog stalking and it turned out that I was right, I wrote her an email and this was the start of a wonderful friendship :)
