Sewing along with Project Sewn and Sewing Indie Month + RUMS/ Bei ein paar sewalongs dabei + RUMS

No, don't go away – this is a new post even though it has almost the same title as the one from last thursday. This week is the „Going Global Challenge“ atProject Sewn. The Competitors and Sew Alongers very asked to sew something inspired by a country. It didn't have to be a traditional costume, but we could take inspiration where ever we wanted to.

Nicht unbedingt eine Tracht sondern was man will.

Well, if someone asks me which country I love most, „Italy“ is the answer right away. I love Germany and wouldn't want to move, but every year I long for a holiday in Italy. Like most people from southern Germany I've been there several times. I'm now 32 years old and I guess I've been in Italy at least 20, rather 25 times. I've been to almost every area of Italy (there are some white spots where I haven't been in southern Italy) and I love them all. Whether you are still in the Alps at Lake Garda or at the beaches near Venice, whether you are in the beautiful Cinque Terre in Liguria or visit one of the stunning little villages in Tuscany, whether you are in one of the most incredible cities of the world (e.g. Venice, Florence, Rome) or enjoy some real mediterrean life (and the best pizza and ice cream) in Naples, whether you look at the ophiolite in Elba (google ophiolite – some really cool geology stuff) or the volcanoes at the Eolian Islands and Siciliy – you are always up for an incredible holiday.

But not only is Italy worth a holiday visit, I have studied some Italian in Florence for 1.5 months and I worked at the Vesuvius observatory in Naples for 2 months and those prolonged stays in these incredible cities were some of the most amazing months in my life. You see: Italy has my heart and it was obvious that I would sew something inspired by it. I thought about what is typical for Italy and what I really love about it: Beaches, gelato, pizza and pasta, panna cotta, San Pellegrino Aranciata - obviously food is important when you are in Italy – sun, warmth, la dolce vita, the perfectly styled Italian women, but also a family of 7 on a vespa and people singing opera everywhere in Naples, and so on and so forth. I could probably sew a whole wardrobe just taking inspiration from Italy ;)

Well, instead of sewing something with 100s of pizze on it (eehm), I decided to go with something less obvious: Flowers (yes, I know that would have fit with last week's theme, too). Every time that I am in Italy, I take some pictures of flowers that have obviously conquered a house ;) Everything grows and flourishs in Italy to an amount that is totally different to what we experience in Germany. While we have to care really well for an olenader, in Italy they just grow between the two tracks of the highway!

So flowers (i.e. flower fabric) it was + the wish to be at the beach (i.e. dress) + the wish to feel really warm (i.e. flutter sleeves). I again chose the Out and About Dressfrom Sew Caroline. This time I used the tutorial from Dixie DIY to change the sleeve to flutter sleeves and I added a circle skirt instead of the gathered skirt. For the circle skirt I used Dana'stutorial. You get the inner circumference by measuring the front and back bodice piece (be careful to subtract the seam allowance). I like how it twirls and that you get an extremly full skirt without having to gather or to sew side seams. This will surely not be my last circle skirt, although next time I might go with a little less fullness and do a 2/3 circle skirt as suggested here.
Oh, and you might have recognized my glasses - I'm channeling my inner Italian ;)

Ich hab wieder das Out and About Dress von Sew Caroline genäht.
Again this is a pattern hack of the Out and About Dress so I send it to the respective link party of Sewing IndieMonth. Further, it's Thursday so off it also goes to RUMS.

Da das wieder ein pattern hack vom Out and About Dress ist, geht's damit wieder ab zur link party bei Sewing Indie Month. Und RUMS-Tag ist natürlich auch!

  2. Ahaaaa! Dein Blog kommt mir sehr gelegen!
    Mach's gut!

  4. Beautiful job on your dress! I went to Italy when I was 12 (visiting family and site seeing) and I hope to go back someday. I fell in love with it too and your writing brought back a lot of memories.
